rio de janeiro

I shot these photos in Rio during the IBIP 2013 study tour.  One of my favorite parts of this trip was getting the opportunity to meet citizens of the Cantagalo favela and watching my students interact with the two young men who showed us around their home neighborhood.  A favela, in Brazil, is another word for “slum.”  Many of the slums in Rio have been pacified by police and military units which is intended to lower crime rates and increase educational and career opportunities for its residents.  The two men that showed us around Cantagalo were currently studying computer science and engineering / technology in a University there in Rio.  It was so rewarding to hear about their story of success and to see them bond with my students.
